Health and Safety Disclaimer

Athlea is a coaching tool. It reads your training and recovery data and gives you sessions, plans and guidance. It is not a doctor, a physiotherapist, a dietitian or an anti-doping adviser, and it should never be used as a substitute for one.

The section on supplements and anti-doping is the most important thing on this page. If you compete under anti-doping rules, read it before you use anything Athlea tells you about a supplement.

Not medical advice

Read this first

Nothing Athlea produces — plans, sessions, nutrition targets, recovery guidance, supplement information, or anything the assistant says — is medical advice. Athlea does not diagnose, treat, cure, monitor or prevent any disease, injury or condition, and it is not a medical device.

Athlea is a general fitness and wellbeing tool. If you have a medical question, ask a medical professional.

Metrics Athlea shows you — HRV, resting heart rate, sleep quality, training load, recovery scores — are fitness indicators, not clinical measurements. They are not calibrated, validated or intended for diagnosis, and a number moving in the wrong direction is not a diagnosis of anything. Equally, a reassuring number is not evidence that you are well.

Talk to a professional

Speak to your GP or a qualified professional before starting or significantly changing a training or nutrition programme — and particularly before acting on anything Athlea suggests — if any of the following apply to you.

  • You have a heart condition, high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, or any other long-term condition.
  • You are recovering from injury, illness or surgery, or you are under the care of a physiotherapist or consultant.
  • You take prescription medication of any kind.
  • You are pregnant, have recently given birth, or are trying to conceive.
  • You have a history of disordered eating, or a difficult relationship with food, weight or body image.
  • You are new to structured training, returning after a long break, or over 45.

Where a professional’s advice conflicts with what Athlea says, follow the professional. They can examine you. Athlea cannot.

When to stop and get help

Stop the session and seek medical advice if you get chest pain or pressure, severe breathlessness, dizziness or fainting, an irregular or racing heartbeat at rest, sudden severe joint or muscle pain, numbness or weakness on one side, confusion, or vision changes. Do not push through any of those because a plan said to.

Athlea will sometimes tell you to train when you feel wrong, because it cannot feel anything. Your judgement overrides the plan every time.

Emergencies

Athlea is not an emergency service

Athlea does not monitor you, does not detect medical emergencies, and will not alert anyone on your behalf. Nobody is watching your data in real time.

In the UK, call 999 for an emergency, or 111 for urgent medical advice that is not an emergency. Outside the UK, use your local emergency number.

Training carries risk

Physical training carries inherent risk of injury, and endurance and strength training in particular carry risks that no plan can eliminate. By following guidance from Athlea you accept that risk, and you remain responsible for deciding whether a given session is appropriate for you on a given day.

Athlea sees only what you and your devices tell it. It does not know about the poor night’s sleep you did not log, the flight you took yesterday, the niggle you did not report, or the illness you are just coming down with. A plan built on incomplete data is a suggestion, not an instruction.

Nutrition and disordered eating

Athlea’s nutrition guidance is general fitness information. It is not dietetic care, clinical nutrition, or treatment for any condition, and it is not tailored to allergies, intolerances, medical diets or medication interactions unless you have told it and it can act on that.

Calorie targets, weight targets and body composition tracking can be harmful for people with a history of disordered eating or relative energy deficiency. If any of that applies to you, please speak to your GP or a registered dietitian before using these features, and consider turning off weight and calorie tracking.

Support is available in the UK from your GP, from NHS 111, and from Beat, the UK’s eating disorder charity, at beateatingdisorders.org.uk. We would rather you stopped using Athlea and got support than kept training through it.

Supplements and anti-doping

Never read a screening result as permission

Athlea can tell you whether an ingredient appears on a specific dated version of the WADA Prohibited List. That is the entire claim. It is a lookup against a published document on a published date.

Absence from that list is not a statement that a substance is permitted, safe, legal, clean, or compliant with your sport’s rules. Athlea will never say a substance is “permitted” or “safe to take”, and if you ever see it phrased that way, that is a defect — report it to hello@athlea.ai.

You are strictly liable, not us

Under the World Anti-Doping Code, an athlete is personally responsible for any prohibited substance found in their sample. It does not matter whether you intended to take it, whether you knew it was there, or what a piece of software told you. This is the principle of strict liability, and no tool can transfer it away from you.

Why a clean ingredient list is not a clean product

  • Supplements are not regulated like medicines. Products routinely contain substances that are not on the label, through contamination in manufacturing or deliberate adulteration.
  • Athlea screens the ingredients a product declares. It cannot detect what a product actually contains. No database can.
  • Batch-level testing schemes such as Informed Sport are the only meaningful mitigation, and even they reduce risk rather than remove it.
  • The same brand can change formulation between batches, countries and package sizes.

Why the list itself is not the whole answer

  • The Prohibited List is revised at least annually and can be amended in-year. A screening result is only as current as the version it was run against, and Athlea shows you that date for a reason.
  • Some substances are prohibited in competition only, some at all times, and some only in particular sports. “Not prohibited” in one context is not “not prohibited” in yours.
  • The monitoring programme is not the Prohibited List, and a substance can move between them.
  • Your national anti-doping organisation and your international federation may impose rules that go beyond the WADA list.
  • If you need a prohibited substance for a medical condition, you need a Therapeutic Use Exemption granted in advance by the right body. Athlea plays no part in that process.

What to do instead

Treat Athlea’s screening as a first filter that tells you what to ask about — never as a final clearance. Check any substance or medication with your national anti-doping organisation’s official resources before you take it. In the UK that means UK Anti-Doping and the Global DRO service; elsewhere, your own NADO. If you have a doctor or team physician, involve them.

Liability for an anti-doping rule violation

The intended position is that Athlea accepts no liability for an anti-doping rule violation, sanction, or loss of eligibility arising from a decision you took after using the service. How far that exclusion can lawfully go — particularly against a consumer — is a question for a solicitor, not for us.

Where the data comes from

Supplement and ingredient information is drawn from third-party sources, including public product label databases and the published WADA Prohibited List. We do not control those sources and cannot guarantee they are complete, current or free of error. Where a source is wrong, Athlea will be wrong in the same way.

Where a dataset we rely on requires attribution, we give it alongside the data it supports.

No guarantee of results

We make no promise about performance, fitness, weight, body composition or health outcomes. Results depend on your training history, genetics, sleep, stress, nutrition, consistency, and a great deal Athlea cannot see. Anything on this site describing what athletes achieve is illustrative, not a prediction of what you will achieve.

AI-generated guidance

Athlea’s coaching output is generated by AI models, which can be wrong in ways that read as confident and specific. That is a distinct risk from ordinary imprecision, and it is set out in full in the AI Disclosure. Read it alongside this page.
